  • ¾ cup (170 grams) unsalted butter, divided
  • 2 cups (250 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided
  • 1 cup (245 grams) whole milk, room temperature
  • 2 cups (226 grams) mild cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley


  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, melt ½ cup butter. Set aside to cool slightly.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon salt.
  4. Pour the milk into the melted butter and stir to combine.
  5. Pour the milk and butter mixture over the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the cheddar cheese.
  6. Drop about ½ cup of dough onto the prepared baking sheet using your fingers, shaping each bun to be about the size of a small fist. For smaller buns, use another lined baking sheet and make each about ¼ cup in size.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the buns are just barely golden brown.
  8. While the buns are baking, melt the remaining ¼ cup of butter in a small microwave-safe bowl. Add parsley and the remaining teaspoon of salt, stirring to combine.
