Ingredients for Mashed Sweet Potatoes

  • Sweet Potatoes: Unlike yams, sweet potatoes have red skin and orange flesh. Yams have brown skin and white flesh that resembles tree bark. Both are starchy, but sweet potatoes are much sweeter.
  • Milk: Whole milk is used in this recipe, but for a creamier texture, you can use heavy cream.
  • Butter: Both salted and unsalted butter work fine. You can adjust the salt levels at the end if needed.
  • Maple Syrup: Ensure the label reads 100% pure maple syrup.

How to Peel and Slice a Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes often have tougher skin than regular potatoes. Here are some tips to make peeling and slicing easier:

  1. Wash: Rinse the potatoes in warm water to help soften the skin. Scrubbing them can also help.
  2. Trim: Cut off any rough or ‘woody’ ends.
  3. Peel: Use a serrated or regular peeler, peeling from root to tip.
  4. Slice: Once peeled, cut the potatoes evenly to ensure uniform cooking.

Can I Peel and Cut Sweet Potatoes Ahead of Time?

Yes! If preparing for the holidays, you can peel the potatoes a day in advance. Keep the peeled sweet potatoes in a bowl of cold water. Before cooking, dry them with a paper towel to reduce any bacteria.
