Ingredients for Pinulada (Italian Honey Balls)

  • 6 eggs
  • 1 lb all-purpose flour, sifted (about 4 cups / 450 grams)
  • 1 medium jar of honey (about 12 oz / 340 grams)
  • 2-3 tablespoons sugar (about 25-40 grams)
  • Holiday sprinkles, for decoration
  • Small festive bowls (such as mini aluminum ones) for serving
  • 1 large brown paper bag, for draining
  • Oil for deep frying (such as vegetable or canola oil)

How to Make Pinulada (Italian Honey Balls)

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and sifted flour until a smooth dough forms.
  2. Take a medium portion of dough and roll it into a thin snake, about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) in diameter.
  3. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into small pieces, about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) each. These will puff up when fried.
  4. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the dough pieces in small batches, turning occasionally, until they are light golden brown. Do not let them get too dark.
  5. Transfer the fried dough balls to a large brown paper bag to absorb excess oil. Let them cool completely.
  6. In a medium saucepan, heat the honey and sugar, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  7. Add the cooled honey balls, a few at a time, to the honey mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated.
  8. Using a slotted spoon, scoop the honey-coated balls into serving bowls. With wet hands, shape them into small mounds.
  9. Immediately sprinkle with festive holiday sprinkles while the honey is still warm.
  10. Allow the honey balls to set, then serve and enjoy!
