Ingredients & Substitutions
Meat
This recipe uses ground beef, but you can substitute it with Italian sausage, ground turkey, or ground chicken. For a meatless version, simply omit the ground beef.
Ravioli
Frozen ravioli makes this dish incredibly convenient, and there’s no need to thaw or pre-cook them. If you prefer refrigerated ravioli, adjust the cooking time accordingly. Feel free to use your favorite ravioli variety, such as spinach and ricotta, beef, mushroom, or roasted chicken garlic and herb. For an extra challenge, you can even make homemade ravioli!
Marinara Sauce
My five-cheese marinara sauce is an excellent choice for this dish, but you can also use a tomato-based marinara sauce or your favorite brand.
Cheese
This recipe features romano, parmesan, and shredded mozzarella cheese for a rich, cheesy flavor.
Can I Make This in a Different Pan?
Due to the quantity of ravioli lasagna, a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish won’t be large enough. Use a large skillet, preferably a 13-inch (33 cm) oven-safe one, to cook this dish in a single pan.
How to Store Skillet Ravioli
Allow any leftovers to cool to room temperature before storing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Leftovers will keep for 3-4 days.
Can I Freeze Skillet Ravioli?
Yes! This recipe makes a generous amount, so freezing some for later is a great idea. After cooling the skillet ravioli completely, transfer it to a freezer-safe container, label, and date it. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw the ravioli lasagna in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
Ingredients
- 1 pound (450 g) ground beef
- 1 teaspoon (5 g) kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) black pepper
- 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
- 3 teaspoons (10 g) garlic, minced
- 1 bag (25 ounces / 700 g) cheese ravioli, frozen
- 2 jars (24 ounces / 680 g each) marinara sauce
- ¼ cup (25 g) romano cheese, shredded
- ¼ cup (25 g) parmesan cheese, shredded
- 2 cups (230 g) mozzarella, shredded
- Fresh basil, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Set the oven to broil.
- Cook Beef: In a large 13-inch (33 cm) oven-safe skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with salt, pepper, and onion until the meat is browned and the onions are tender (about 8 minutes). Drain excess grease if necessary.
- Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Add Sauce and Cheeses: Reduce the heat to low. Stir in the marinara sauce, romano cheese, and parmesan cheese.
- Add Ravioli: Add the frozen ravioli, ensuring they are submerged in the sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Cover with a lid or aluminum foil and simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until the ravioli are cooked through (20-25 minutes).
- Broil: Uncover the skillet and top with shredded mozzarella. Broil for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is browned and bubbly.
- Garnish and Serve: Garnish with fresh basil and serve hot.
